How Can Chiropractic Care help me ?

The Global Burden of Disease, (GBD, 2019) alongside the WHO (2021) have outlined that headaches, neck pain, back pain and depression all contribute towards the top ten causes of overall disease burden. The disabling and painful features of musculoskeletal pain continue to contribute towards the major causes of disability and reason for time being lost due to illness. For instance, headache disorders are also estimated as the most common type of nervous system disorders (IHS, 2021 & WHO, 2021). If you suffer from back pain, neck pain, headaches or any kind of musculoskeletal pain, book in a consultation to see if we can help you.

Depending on the issue, treatments would be either tailored to the region of discomfort or the whole body. Our primary focus is to reduce your pain by improving your posture, mobility and stability. Our goal is to provide you with a long term solution and not just a quick fix by addressing the root cause of your health issues.

What Movement Disorders are Chiropractors unable to restore?

During your consultation, your Chiropractor will perform a series of Neuro Integrity assessments, along with various Orthopaedic and Neurodynamic tests. This comprehensive health check will help determine if chiropractic care is suitable for you. If needed, your Chiropractor can also make emergency or non-emergency referrals to other healthcare providers to ensure you receive the appropriate care.

Please note that many acute and chronic conditions can significantly impact movement, making chiropractic care potentially unhelpful or contraindicated. Our Chiropractors are medically trained to identify these conditions and can refer you to other healthcare providers while providing a detailed explanation of your condition and how to best manage your symptoms.

How long would it take for you to “fix” my pain?

We often receive questions about how long recovery takes. The simple answer is that it largely depends on your compliance with your Plan of Management (PoM). During your follow-up sessions, your chiropractor will discuss the details of your personalized PoM with you.

Your path to recovery is directly linked to how consistently you integrate this plan into your daily life. Factors such as your diet, sleep patterns, stress management, breathing techniques, exercise routines, consistent engagement in active rehabilitation, and hydration all play a role in your musculoskeletal health and overall recovery.

Are there any risks to chiropractic treatment ?

It's important to understand that all medical interventions carry some level of risk.

Benign AEs to spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) are common in 23-83% of adults and typically resolve on their own within 24 hours. These may include stiffness, headaches, dizziness, tiredness, tingling in the arms (following neck treatments), or musculoskeletal pain. Children may also experience these benign AEs, as well as vomiting and excessive crying.

Serious adverse events from SMT are rare, ranging from 0.00005% (1 per 2 million manipulations) to 0.13% (13 per 10,000). Examples of serious AEs, such as stroke, spinal, or neurological complications, are typically reported to result from pre-existing conditions. Additionally, there does not appear to be a greater risk of traumatic injuries for elderly patients seeking chiropractic care compared to visiting a medical general practitioner for neuromusculoskeletal problems.

This information is referenced from Swait, G. and Finch, R., *What are the risks of manual treatment of the spine? A scoping review for clinicians. Chiropractic & Manual Therapies*, 25(1). (2017).

For Dry Needle Therapy (DNT), serious adverse events (AEs) such as pneumothorax, cardiac tamponade, and organ damage are very rare, occurring in approximately 0.04% (4 per 10,000) of cases. Mild or moderate AEs are more common and include bruising (7.55%), bleeding (4.65%), pain during treatment (3.01%), and pain after treatment (2.19%). Less common AEs include aggravation of symptoms (0.88%), drowsiness (0.26%), headaches (0.14%), and nausea (0.13%). Rare AEs (0.04% or less) include fatigue, altered emotions, shaking, itching, claustrophobia, and numbness.

For reference, Dry Needling is considered safe when compared to the serious adverse reactions associated with taking Aspirin (18.77%) and Ibuprofen (13.7%). This information is supported by Brady, S et al., *Journal of Manual and Manipulative Therapy* (2013).

Are they any contraindications to this type of therapy?

There are several absolute and relative contraindications to these types of therapies, these are:

  • Aneurysms

  • Broken Vertebrae

  • Bruises from a previous cupping therapy

  • Blood thinners

  • Fractures

  • High Blood Pressure

  • Known active infection

  • Metastasized Cancer

  • Osteoporosis

  • Open wounds

  • Patients with Artificial Discs or Other Spinal Implant

  • Some Skin Lesions

  • Spinal Tumor

  • Spinal Fusion

  • Sunburn

  • Pregnancy

What procedures have you put in place to reduce the above risk factors ?

We want to assure you of the comprehensive safety measures and high standards of care we uphold at our clinic.

Before commencing any treatment, all patients undergo thorough screening for vascular pathologies such as stroke, cerebral artery dissection, Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES), cancer, improper cognition, and spinal stenosis. We also conduct a detailed examination to understand the nature of your specific complaint(s) and further reduce any potential risk factors.

Our practitioners are highly qualified and dedicated to providing patient-centered care. They have successfully completed rigorous training programs to ensure they are fully equipped to deliver your treatment. If treatments such as Dry Needling Therapy (DNT), Spinal Manipulative Therapy (SMT), cupping, or Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) are indicated, we will obtain both verbal and written consent during your consultation and treatment. Please note that all DNT needles are sterile, single-use only, and are opened from sealed blister packs only at the time of each treatment session.

We strictly adhere to all current health and safety hygiene protocols as recommended by our local authority. Our practitioners consistently meet stringent clinic hygiene requirements before administering DNT or any other treatment(s).
